A tradition in Munich since 1810, Oktoberfest originated from the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Citizens were invited to take part in the festivites for the royal event in front of the city gates.
Since then, it's become a 16-day yearly celebration for those who enjoy Bavarian beer, food, and music--with little mention of the king or queen these days.
