Joshua Bashoium, the founder of Early Warning Labs in Santa Monica, Calif., has developed a system that sends out a heads up alert up to ten seconds before an earthquake hits.

This type of system could issue machine-to-machine commands in the event of an emergency and help individuals get under cover before the shaking starts.

A similar system has already proven its worth in Japan, but Bashoium says progress in the U.S. has been limited due to lack of funds.
