Some of the best epic fantasy films of this century, like “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, are based on classic literature. But the new movie “Noah,” directed by Darren Aronofsky (“Requiem for a Dream”, “Black Swan”), takes it one step further.

Loosely based on the well-known story in the Old Testament of the Bible, Aronosfsky takes the quintessential tale and dramatizes it with supernatural monsters, an archetypal villain, and a longhaired grandfather sage. Aronofsky seems to defy genres with his film, pushing past religion to paint his own picture of what the Noah story is and means.
