Madiba is gone.

Nelson Mandela died Thursday at the age of 95 at his home in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Nobel prize-winner was revered the world over for his actions. He was a key contributor to the creation of South Africa's democratic, multi-racial government in 1994. He guided the country as its first black president afterwards.

In 1964, he was convicted of treason and sentenced to life in prison.  As knowledge of apartheid spread, Mandela became the world's most famous political prisoner. He spent 27 years in the Robben Island prison.  He endured harsh conditions in solitary confinement.  As opposition to apartheid grew, he was released from prison in 1990. When he emerged, he negotiated an end to white minority rule in south africa. Three years after his prison sentence he became the country's first black president.
