Members of Los Angeles Unified School District and the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center announced a new initiative Thursday to support students that identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. The "Out for Safe Schools" initiative encourages youth to feel safe at school, and LAUSD teachers and staff members will wear badges that have the word "ally" on them in seven different languages. Members of the school's Gay Straight Alliance and School of Social Alliance were on hand as LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy and others spoke about the new initiative. The announcement comes the same week as the 25th National Coming Out Day, where individuals celebrate those who publicly identify as LGBT.
