Mayor Eric Garcetti announced a new $1 million Innovation Fund on Thursday that he hopes will make local government more efficient. The fund gives gives city employees money to fix out-of-date or broken systems.

The announcement took place at The Hub, a downtown arts district space where entrepenuers, investors and policy makers gather to collaborate on new ideas. Representatives from business and labor groups were on hand.

"We all have that moment at when we're doing the job the way we're told but we're thinking, 'I know how to make this better'," Garcetti said.

Employees will submit ideas via a website. Todd Sargent, head of the new project, in conjunction with city officials, will decide which ideas will get funding.

City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield said funding for the new project will be voted on every year. If officials think the program isn't working, it could get the boot.
