The Los Angeles City Council council voted 15-0 to pause construction of larger homes, dubbed "McMansions," in historic neighborhoods. The neighborhoods include El Sereno's Berkshire Craftsman District, South Hollywood, Valley Village, The Oaks, Larchmont, Sunset Square, Miracle Mile, Old Granada Hills and North Beverly Grove.

The council will draw up new laws during the construction freeze. The freeze could last anywhere from 45 days to two years.

Some experts question the long-term benefits of regulating home construction, saying it could reduce property values and disincentivize home buyers.
