There are many murals throughout the city of Los Angeles. But most of them are restricted to the walls of businesses.

Today, in a 14-to-1 vote, the City Council passed an ordinance that would allow single-family homes to paint murals on the sides of their homes.

Bernard Parks was the lone councilmember who opposed mural ordinance. In a statement, he said that communities should deciding whether or not residents can paint murals on the sides of their homes.

Parks was alone in his opinion at city hall. But some community members agree with him.

Nina Royal of Tujuna says the amorphous definition of art and murals can invite more graffiti and that some murals may have offensive messages.

But art can also transform. That is the reason why Evan Meyer started Beautify Earth. His goal is to enhance the community through art and murals.

He says he favors the type of art that unifies because it has a greater chance to create peace.

Ultimately, it is up to residents to decide what type of art they want on their walls.
