Host Interview: Alex Blumberg on the Business of Podcasting

A little over a year ago, Alex Blumberg had everything a radio producer could ask for. A producer for the popular NPR podcast Planet Money, he led the extremely successful Planet Money T-Shirt Project, which asked for donations to fund a series of stories about the process of making a custom t-shirt and distributing it to consumers. The crowdfunding effort raised more than $600,000, which gave Blumberg an idea: if listeners were that dedicated to the show, maybe they would support him if he launched his own network. 

Blumberg left NPR and has released five episodes of Startup, which chronicles the process of podcasting for profit. ARN spoke with Blumberg about his decision to break away from NPR and what it's been like to go out on his own.
