USC's Provost Elizabeth Garrett accepted a position at Cornell University as its 13th and first female president.

The announcement surprised the USC community as the information was first posted on the Cornell website. USC President Max Nikias soon afterward sent out a statement of Garrett's new role and praising her accomplishments over the years. The statement was sent through an email the faculty and staff.

"She has proven to be a remarkably dynamic leader, showing boundless energy in advancing the universities initiatives, and a singular gift for innovative and tactical thinking," Nikias said.

Garrett began her career at USC in 2003 as a professor with Gould School of Law. In 2010 she was appointed as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs by President Nikias.

Garret will begin her presdiential duties at Cornell effective July 1.
