USC grad Daniel Heimpel knew he wanted to cover the foster-care system after graduating with his master's in journalism in 2007. Having covered the topic as a student reporter, Heimpel thought more attention needed to be paid to the issue. He eventually started a non-profit organization called Fostering Media Connections, which encourages media outlets to focus on important topics related to children in foster care.

He now teaches a class at USC's Sol Price School of Public Policy called "Media for Social Change." Student work from the class will be presented at a symposium tonight, May 2, in the Ralph and Goldy Lewis Hall auditorium at 6pm.
