U.S. PIRG releases its 25th annual toy safety report

Christmas is just around the corner, which means shopping frenzies have already begun. However, U.S. PIRG says parents must be cautious while shopping in the toy section for their children. In its 25th annual toy safety report released Tuesday, the organization reveals that toy-related injuries sent more than 250,000 children to the emergency room last year. Twelve children did not survive.

One of the biggest health hazards found in toys is exposure to toxic chemicals like lead and phthalates, but the leading cause of toy-related deaths is choking. According to the report, 5.8 million toys and other children’s products have been recalled last year in the United States and Canada due to choking hazards.
