The Furuya's and the Williams' were two different families from two different parts of California that were united by one common problem...each family had a loved one in desperate need of a kidney transplant. They are not alone. Thousands of people in California are on a kidney transplant waiting list.

Part of the issue is waiting for a kidney to become available. The other issue is making sure the kidney is compatible. The process can take years. In the meantime, patients must undergo dialysis...a process that filters out the toxins in the blood. For some people, the process can be depressing.

Doctors at UCLA may have the key in saving precious time and lives. It's called the live organ donation program and it worked for Kuraya and Williams family.
