The Mayor's Battle for LAPD

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa pledged to increase the size of the LAPD when he became Mayor. The current number of officers is the highest it has been in ten years. Despite a budget deficit the Mayor said he would do whatever it takes to maintain the growth in the LAPD. After a week of gang related murders in Los Angeles the Police Chief said that in order to keep residents safe the LAPD needs more officers.
