Today, the Los Angeles County Asian Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Task force held an event in Monterey Park to raise awareness of domestic violence in their community. During the event, Assemblyman Mike Eng announced the two grand prize winners of the Healthy Relationships Art Competition.

For him, this is about more than politics. He faced bullying while in school, so he knows how violence impacts children.

Connie Chung Joe, the co-chair of the Asian Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Task Force, says, "Domestic violence in the Asian Pacific Islander community is a serious problem."

The organization works with the county's youth to teach them the difference between a healthy relationship and abuse.

Shannon Yong, a ninth grader, was one of the two grand prize winners of the art competition. Young's piece is a painting, which shows two hands sprouting up from Earth holding a house. At the bottom of the piece are words that relate domestic violence and young people, such as love and children.

And for Eng, presenting that award was special, too.

Assemblyman Eng also received an award at the end of the program for his hard work for the district in Sacramento. Eng is retiring at the end of his term.
