Kamala Harris, the state attorney general, thanked everyone for their support. Her voice broke with emotion as she said she was humbled. She pledged to represent California, and she said she would not only be tough on crime but also smart about crime.

Harris is the first woman, the first African-American and the first Indian-American to be elected attorney general.
