Earlier today the city released a plan to combat gang activity in Los Angeles. We talked with the Executive Director of the Los Angeles City Human Rights Commission Rabbi Allen Freehling, who has been working with city officials and the community to devise an anti-gang initiative. Freehling has been with the Commission since 1994. Previously he was the Senior Rabbi of University Synagogue in L.A. for 30 years. Freehling has held numerous leadership and board positions and is considered to be an expert on a variety of economic, psychological and social issues.

Gang violence is a significant problem in the area. In the past five years there have been more than 23,000 crimes committed by gang members in L.A. Freehling discussed the new anti-gang blueprint and the city’s efforts to implement intervention and prevention programs.
