"We are celebrating today our new location and our one-millionth member," a representative from Health Net said.
Politicians and community leaders cut the ribbon to loud cheers of about 75 people at Health Nets new community solutions center this morning.
"I'm looking around, this is truly the heart of the community," Iso Nawatsu, representative for State Senator Ed Hernandez, said.
Former L.A. Dodger's pitcher, Bobby Castillo, was there to sign autographs and fitness instructor Andy Padilla gave a free workout after the speeches.
Tony Demarco, President of the Whittier Boulevard Merchants Association, said "We are very very happy that Health Net chose Whittier Boulevard and East Los Angeles to come and set up store here."
During the event, locals from the community were invited to attend and participate in free health screenings, food samples, fitness demonstrations and raffles.
Two members of Health Net, Carolina and Lorelas Asencio, were a mother and her daughter who have been attending classes and screenings for over a year.
"I came here and I took the classes, and I've been hooked ever since," Lorelas Asencio said.
This is Health Nets only location so far. But, they say they hope to expand their efforts to help East Los Angeles. Eventually, they want to have more locations all over southern California.
