With Sept. 11, 2001 now almost a decade behind us, and with the current focus on staving off the economic recession, is it possible that we have lost our focus on security threats? Michael Chertoff, the Secretary of Homeland Security under former President George W. Bush, has not.

Chertoff cited the recent discovery of parcel bombs on cargo planes from Yemen that were intercepted before reaching the United States. He says the incident is an indication that terrorists are changing their tactics.

With the evolution in tactics, responsibility for homeland security should not fall solely on the federal government, Chertoff said. We have not allowed an attack on American soil in nearly a decade, but Chertoff emphasized that it is no time to sleep on possible security risks.
