As Los Angeles prepares for the 2010 census, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced a month-long, citywide campaign. He stressed the importance of filling out the census, emphasizing its ability to help the government paint a picture of Los Angeles. But he also stressed the importance of its impact on federal funding. Villaraigosa said census information is used to determine how much federal funding is received, and undercounting could result in the loss of millions of dollars.

The Mayor said that Los Angeles was undercounted by nearly 80,000 people in the last census, costing the city more than $200 million in federal funding over a 10 year period. Los Angeles was the second most undercounted city; New York was first.
