Rebecca Heyliger is captain of the USC Women's Swim Team. She's from Bermuda and likes to let Bob Marley's reggae swim in her head before races. Bexx, as she's called by her teammates, is not just a competitive swimmer. She's also pursuing a master's degree in public diplomacy, an academic task so demanding that few competitive swimmers at this level would even consider it.
Swimmers are judged winners or losers by seconds, or nanoseconds. Bexx may not be the fastest, but head coach Dave Salo says she brings something unique to the team both in and outside the pool. Detours reporter Kristin Marguerite Doidge produced this piece.
