California became the first state to ban plastic bags. Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill Tuesday morning.

“This bill is a step in the right direction – it reduces the torrent of plastic polluting our beaches, parks and even the vast ocean itself,” said Governor Brown. “We’re the first to ban these bags, and we won’t be the last.”

California Against Waste Policy Analyst Sue Vang says they have already seen a reduction of pollution in cities like Los Angeles and San Jose. The bill not only reduces pollution, but also seeks to protect and create green jobs by creating incentives for plastic bag manufacturers to make reusable bags.
