National Signing Day: USC Football Outlook

ESPN will be traveling to hundreds of high schools to host wall-to-wall coverage of national signing day.

It’s the day when the nations top-rated prospects dramatically decide where they will attend college in front of friends, families and coaches.

To parce out the exciting time in college football, uscfootball.com recruiting expert Johnny Freatman explains the significance of signing day for athletes.

"It's the culmination of a multi-year process, as recruiting is starting earlier and earlier. for a lot of them, it's going to be a release," said Freatman.

Over the years, the likes of Matt Barkley, Robert Woods and Reggie Bush have captivated the Southland. This year's class of recruits has the potential to be just as good.

"The caliber of players is truly outstanding," says Freatman. "Max Browne, Kenny Biegelow and Su'a Cravens are the best players at their position in the country,” he said.

The best player cCalifornia has to offer, Su’a Cravens, is already signed at USC. local high school athletes like Cravens can revitalize college football.

"The life blood of every program is recruiting," according to Freatman.

Unfortunatley for the Trojans, recruiting efforts are hampered by NCAA sanctions. The NCAA sacntioned the football team for providing improper benefits to Reggie Bush in 2004.

USC can now only offer 15 scholarships per year, 10 less than before. And that puts more pressure on USC coaches to recruit efficiently.

"USC coaches spend more time on the recruiting sides of things than the x and o's of college football," said Freatman.

As the hours tick down before signing day, thousands of college football fans in Los Angeles will be anxiously waiting to see if their school grabs the top player. The future of USC football will hinge on tomorrow’s results.

"Tomorrow can really change the fortunes of the program, if a couple commits go the right way," according to Freatman.

If you do not plan on watching the event, keep an eye out for a possible USC recruit, cornerback Jalen Ramsey.
