Signe Okkels Larsen

I am originally from Odense in Denmark, but the last eight years I have spent my time in the capital, Copenhagen. I am now enjoying living in Los Angeles.

I have dual bachelor degree in Journalism and History from Roskilde University. I have a great interest in covering the African continent and I have previously studied Sociology and Political Science one semester at Makerere University in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. In 2012 I covered the refugee the refugee crisis and war for oil between South Sudan and Sudan. A year later I produced a short documentary on skin bleaching and a young woman's perception of beauty in Zambia.

Artists, who work with concepts and genre, inspire me. For instance, I am huge fan of the Danish film director Lars von Trier, who created the revolutionary 'Dogme 95 Manifesto'

I have an academic background in history. History is important to me, because of its ability to shed light on the present, see coherences and make the future better. As a historian and a journalist, I aim to cover today's world with reflection, insight and, understanding – that's the kind of documenting that I believe in and want to practice.

In my free time, I enjoy the beach and watersports like windsurfing and scuba diving.
I also like hiking and some of my greatest moments include being on top of Mount Kilimanjaro in East Africa and Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia.
