ARN Live Show - March 24, 2009 The teachers strike back... again. The Los Angeles Unified School District is still reviewing plans to cut 8,400 jobs. The board met in a closed session today, but that didn't stop opponents of the plan from making their voices heard. Also on the chopping block, programs like the Diploma Project, which helps at-risk students stay in school until graduation. And Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa made an appearance in South LA to encourage Angelinos to put their trust in banks. It seems like he's asking the impossible, find out what he had to say. Also, we find out if a recent swarm of earthquakes in the southland forebodes our impending doom.

ARN Live Show - March 10, 2009 Not your average day at the school board - teachers, parents and students converged downtown at the Los Angeles Unified School District board meeting today. They're protesting the decision to send out almost 9,000 layoff notices to teachers and school employees. Not all those who receive layoffs will lose their jobs, but the board is required to notify anyone at risk of being let go. In Washington, Obama revealed his plans to improve education and ensure foreign students don't get too far ahead of our own. Also, we find out about the Bus Riders Union and their plans to make Los Angeles more bus friendly. They want to add more buses and reduce fares to make your commute faster and cheaper.

ARN Live Show - February 19, 2009 California finally has a state budget. Legislators finally agreed on a compromise that would increase taxes and decrease spending. The new budget would also cut funds from education and healthcare. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa commended Sacramento on reaching agreement and also announced that he would be lobbying to get more federal aid to put more police officers on the streets in Los Angeles. We also take a look at how a culinary program at Dorsey High School is helping to bring a new spin to the traditional home economics class. Executive Producer Kaitlin Funaro serves as guest host.

ARN Live Show - February 10, 2009 In Washington, the Senate passed Barack Obama's stimulus package, but in California state authorities are still struggling to reach an agreement on the state budget. State lawmakers still haven't finalized a budget. The $40 billion budget gap is leaving county officials in a tight spot. County supervisors are considering instituting a hiring freeze to make up for money that the state government can't give them. And downtown, the United Teachers of Los Angeles announced a strike authorization vote. The UTLA wants to increase their bargaining power with LAUSD, with whom they are negotiating new contracts. And Hybrid vehicle owners might save on gas, but they won't save on parking anymore.

But it's not just brush being burned by the flames - the firefighting effort putting a strain on the state;s already-scorched budget. But what it loses in the fire, the state will make up in budget cuts. California State University students and faculty are reacting to news that the school system will reduce next year's incoming class by 10,000 applicants to cut costs. And the LAPD - no stranger to tight budgets - receives a generous donation from a city councilman that will go toward testing the department's huge backlog of rape kits.
