The Los Angeles Unified School District managed to save 1,900 elementary teachers from layoffs. Superintendent Ramone C. Cortinez says a combination of state and federal stimulus funds were used to essentially buy back teachers that had already received layoff notices. Thousands of other teachers and district employees are still at risk. And after the suicide of an inmate at the Men's Central Jail, the ACLU says more needs to be done to help inmates with mental health problems. And the economic recession has caused the biggest slump in on-location filming in L.A. in 16 years.

The death of a student in a tragic hit and run shocked the USC community over the weekend, and now police are stepping up their search for the killer. Also in an effort to reduce crime the Governor and other city officials unveiled their annual "Gifts for Guns" program. The program promotes gun owners exchanging their firearms for gift certificates to grocery stores and other retail outlets. U.S. Mexico relations are taking a front seat in Los Angeles. Javier Rodriguez from the March 25 Coalition weighted in on the subject. Also education is still a hot topic in Los Angeles. From funding for books to the 24th Street Elementary School instating a community gardens program - administrators and students tell us about the programs that are helping them get through these tough times.

The teachers strike back... again. The Los Angeles Unified School District is still reviewing plans to cut 8,400 jobs. The board met in a closed session today, but that didn't stop opponents of the plan from making their voices heard. Also on the chopping block, programs like the Diploma Project, which helps at-risk students stay in school until graduation. And Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa made an appearance in South LA to encourage Angelinos to put their trust in banks. It seems like he's asking the impossible, find out what he had to say. Also, we find out if a recent swarm of earthquakes in the southland forebodes our impending doom.

Not your average day at the school board - teachers, parents and students converged downtown at the Los Angeles Unified School District board meeting today. They're protesting the decision to send out almost 9,000 layoff notices to teachers and school employees. Not all those who receive layoffs will lose their jobs, but the board is required to notify anyone at risk of being let go. In Washington, Obama revealed his plans to improve education and ensure foreign students don't get too far ahead of our own. Also, we find out about the Bus Riders Union and their plans to make Los Angeles more bus friendly. They want to add more buses and reduce fares to make your commute faster and cheaper.
