Mostly one-story homes line the streets of Vernon, many of them with gated entries. Graffiti tells the story of the area’s gang activity.  Numerous Mexican restaurants reflect Vernon’s mostly Hispanic population, while the discount stores speak to the low-income residents. Auto shops and churches mark the corners.

Vernon was once home to the Vernon Tigers, a minor league baseball team in the Pacific Coast League.
