LAPD Raid The Avenues Gang in Northeast Los Angeles By Jessica Flores,

Twelve-hundred police officers raided Glassel Park at 3 a.m. and arrested 50 Avenues gang members. The officers served warrants for drug and gun trafficking among other federal felonies. The raid is a part of a multi-agency crime crackdown. Mayor Villariagosa, LAPD, and other officials discussed the crackdown in a news conference this afternoon, saying both tough on crime policies and crime prevention programs are needed to address city gang crime.

Family members of three slain men gathered at the Board of Supervisor's meeting to call for an investigation into a string of deadly shootings by Sheriff Deputies. Violence in Los Angeles is down, but fatal shooting by Sheriff Deputies has increased. There have been 13 deadly shootings this year, up from five in 2008. Many of the men were shot in the back as they ran from the police. Their families are not satisfied with the official explanations, and think the Sheriff Department needs special investigation. Last week, Sheriff Lee Baca said he would ensure his department completes their own investigations into the shootings within 90 days.

Councilman Bill Rosendahl addressed bikers today during the first-ever bike count in Los Angeles. Members of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition gathered to count cyclists and pedestrians in order to assess how to improve transit infrastructure and make it safer. Rosendahl said that the count will insure stimulus funds from Washington, and the improvements can be expected to be implemented within a year.
