The population of working poor in Los Angeles County is 7.5 percentage points higher than in the country as a whole, according to a new report, "L.A. County 10 Years Later: A Tale of Two Cities, One Future." The United Way of Greater Los Angeles, which issued the report, is working with business and civic leaders for improvements in jobs, education and housing in Los Angeles County.

Students in public school music programs aren't used to hearing good news. A couple of celebrities changed that on Tuesday, and now hundreds of Los Angeles high school students are on their way to playing new instruments. At a surprise announcement at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Jamie Foxx and Dominic Monaghan told cheering students their schools would be getting $100,000 to buy them new instruments. The donation is part of Fidelity Investments 2010 Future Stage program.
